Richard Gere Talks Sundance Film ‘Arbitrage,’ Julia Roberts

LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- Richard Gere walks the red carpet during the 6th International Rome Film Festival in Rome, Italy, on November 3, 2011Caption Richard Gere walks the red carpet during the 6th International Rome Film Festival in Rome, Italy, on November 3, 2011Richard Gere has one of the most buzzed about movies at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival with “Arbitrage,” and he hopes the project will have an impact with a wider audience.

“It’s going to resonate with [the Bernie] Madoff [scandal] and a lot of other problems we’ve had with the morality of our money system,” Richard told Access Hollywood correspondent Tim Vincent.

The film takes its name from a type of trading, the actor said.

“It’s actually, it’s a way to make money,” Richard said, when Tim asked about the title. “You buy small and you sell heavy and it’s a very computerized thing. It has to be done in milliseconds to make money. This is a story about a guy who’s made a lot of money from that game.”

Richard famously played corporation trader Edward Lewis in “Pretty Woman,” but he said the only thing Edward and his “Arbitrage” character, Robert Miller, have in common is being in the world of business.

“He was a corporate raider. This guy’s not a corporate raider. It’s more conceptual what this guy does. Money itself, isn’t an object, it’s in the digital world. There’s nothing you can hold on to any more, it’s always moving,” he said.

Like his “Pretty Woman,” character, Robert Miller is popular with the ladies, even the ones he doesn’t hire, and when talk turned to women, Tim asked if Richard would like to reunite with Julia Roberts on the big screen.

“Of course,” Richard said.

“She’s a lot older than me, so I don’t know if it’s gonna work,” he joked.

Charlie Sheen Talks Ladies – Onscreen & Off

First Published: January 24, 2012 4:14 PM EST Credit: Access Hollywood

Charlie Sheen appears on Access Hollywood Live on January 24, 2012 Caption Charlie Sheen appears on Access Hollywood Live on January 24, 2012 MIAMI, Fla. -- Charlie Sheen is set to make his return to the small screen in the upcoming “Anger Management” on FX, but which female actress is in the lead to play opposite the headline-maker?

”[Selma Blair] is a strong frontrunner. She’s a very special lady and is as pretty as the day is long and has never really had the opportunity to do something where she can shine, because off camera she’s hilarious,” Charlie told Billy Bush on Tuesday’s Access Hollywood Live, which aired live from a poolside at the Fontainebleau Hotel in Miami Beach. “I think [she’s] one of the prettiest women in Hollywood.”

As for his former real life leading lady, Denise Richards, who he recently vacationed with in Mexico, the actor said he was overjoyed to reconnect with his children — daughters Sam, 7, and Lola, 6 — and his and ex-wife.

“It was fabulous. It was one of those trips that reestablished what should have been in place a long time ago. But things happen when they’re supposed to,” Charlie continued. “I came home with like a whole new family.”

The trip even made the actor ponder why their marriage went south.

“She’s really fabulous, best mom in the world,” he said of Denise – who he affectionately referred to as a “stone cold hammer.” “I’m like, ‘Why did I leave her?’ Oh right, she left me!”

Currently, Charlie doesn’t have a serious relationship with anyone special.

“I don’t have a girlfriend, no, but I’m having a good time,” he explained.

His good times include owning up to his past mishaps and shenanigans.

“Listen to this crap! Did this really happen? It’s so silly. It was an odyssey of, ‘What was that?’” Charlie said as Billy read the actor a few of his now infamous phrases like, “Winning,” and “Tiger Blood.” “I don’t think that can happen again, but I own that whole experience. It was really kind of an elaborate lesson to remind me to basically stick to what you know.”

Adding, “I insist on enjoying every moment these days.”

“Anger Management” premieres on FX in June.

Oscar 2012 Snubs & Surprises!

First Published: January 24, 2012 11:37 AM EST Credit: Fox Searchlight

Ryan Gosling in ‘Crazy Stupid Love’ / Michael Fassbender in ‘Shame’Caption Ryan Gosling in ‘Crazy Stupid Love’ / Michael Fassbender in ‘Shame’ LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- The 84th Annual Academy Award nominations were announced Tuesday morning with some surprising nominees – but not all of this year’s favorite big screen performances and films were honored with a nomination.

Martin Scorsese’s “Hugo” surprising led the nominations with 11, edging out silent film “The Artist” for most nods, which earned an equally impressive 10 nominations.

Demian Bichir, who might be best known for his role on Showtime’s “Weeds” where he played the father Mary-Louise Parker’s baby, is up against Hollywood heavyweights like Brad Pitt and George Clooney in the Best Actor race for his work in “A Better Life.”

Another surprise was the love the Academy gave “Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close” — Tom Hanks and Sandra Bullock’s post 9/11 drama, which has polarized audiences and critics. The movie scored a Best Picture nomination and a Best Supporting Actor nod for Max von Sydow.

“Bridesmaids” star Melissa McCarthy was a nice surprise nomination in the Best Supporting Actress category for her hilarious performance in the breakout comedy. Co-star Kristen Wiig and writer Annie Mumolo also earned a nomination for Best Original Screenplay for raucous box office hit.

And then there are the stars whose phones did not ring with good news this morning.

Despite his powerful performance – and nod of approval from George Clooney at the Golden Globes – Michael Fassbender was shut out for his role in “Shame.”

Ryan Gosling who went into award season with major buzz for three films – “Drive,” “The Ides of March,” and “Crazy Stupid Love” was also snubbed.

Other acting snubs included Leonardo DiCaprio for “J. Edgar,” Albert Brooks for “Drive,” Tilda Swinton in “We Need To Talk About Kevin,” Charlize Theron for “Young Adult,” and young star Shailene Woodley, who many thought would earn a nomination for her work as George Clooney’s daughter in “The Descendants.”

The snubs continued with Steven Spielberg who failed to earn a Best Director nomination, even though “War Horse” was honored with a nod for Best Picture. The Hollywood veteran did earn a nod for producing “War Horse.”

A surprise snub came in the Best Animated Feature category for “The Adventures of Tintin,” which took home the Golden Globe in the same category, but failed to get any Oscar love.

And there won’t be any musical catfights on Oscar night between Elton John and Madonna (or Elton’s partner David Furnish), who were shut out of the Best Song category.

Find out who will take home Oscar gold on February 26, with host Billy Crystal, live on ABC at 7 PM ET/4 PM PT.

MILAN | Sun Jul 1, 2012 8:26am EDT

MILAN (Reuters) - Italy's competition regulator is threatening Apple Inc with further fines of up to 300,000 euros ($381,000) if it does not offer local customers a free two-year warranty as demanded by Italian law, a source close to the watchdog said on Sunday.

In Italy consumers who buy electronic products and other durable goods have the right to get two years of free assistance, irrespective of other warranties offered by a manufacturer.

The AGCM competition and market authority has already imposed fines of 900,000 euros on divisions of Apple, which offers a paid technical support service, for failing to tell customers about their rights to free assistance.

But months after the previous fine, Apple has failed to comply with the antitrust request, the source said. The company currently offers a free one-year guarantee scheme, which can be extended to two years on payment of a fee.

"The antitrust (authority) has opened a procedure of non-compliance against Apple, complaining about two unlawful practices," the source told Reuters.

"If they do not comply, they risk fines for up to 300,000 euros," the source said.

The AGCM, which declined to comment, has alleged that information provided by Apple about an extra guarantee scheme encourages customers to buy the service without clearly explaining that the company is obliged to offer a two-year free warranty, the source said.

The request to comply, sent in recent days, will be made public by the AGCM next week and the U.S. group has 30 days to respond.

Apple appealed against the Italian antitrust fine but lost in court earlier this year.

No one at Apple in Italy or the United States was immediately available for comment on Sunday.

LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- Jonah Hill steps out at the 69th Annual Golden Globe Awards held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, Calif. on January 15, 2012Caption Jonah Hill steps out at the 69th Annual Golden Globe Awards held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, Calif. on January 15, 2012A few years ago, Jonah Hill played everyone’s go-to sidekick in comedies like “Get Him to the Greek” and “Superbad,” but from Tuesday, he is forever known as an Oscar nominee.

“I feel like I’m in a dream still,” Jonah told Access Hollywood on Tuesday, just a short while after learning he had picked up a Best Supporting Actor nod for his work opposite Brad Pitt in “Moneyball.” “I didn’t sleep all night and then I watched it on TV and I’ve just been on the phone ever since… I’m really, really overwhelmed, I can’t believe that this is my life right now.”

Jonah made the successful leap from comedy to drama with baseball film and he’s pleased that Oscar voters recognized his performance.

“To me, it’s really amazing, because I think there’s very few actors — you know, Tom Hanks, Robin Williams — I mean two of the most legendary ones to successfully transition from comedy to drama, being able to do both, and you know the fact that it is my second drama,” an excited Jonah said. “And to get nominated for an Academy Award for it just gives me encouragement to keep making more dramas.”

Brad reached out to Jonah on Tuesday morning, congratulating his fellow nominee.

“He just said he’s really proud and excited and I felt the same way, you know,” Jonah recounted, referring to Brad’s Best Actor nomination. “And I loved ‘[The] Tree of Life,’ his other film that got him nominated for Best Picture.

“Excuse me,” Jonah added, pausing. “I’m very overwhelmed.”
